With Uri Caine on Fender Rhodes and Chris Potter on tenor sax and bass clarinet, Douglas' new band nods to midperiod Miles Davis. The sonic textures may be a throwback, but Douglas' trumpet finds new modes of expression within the distinctive architecture of his compositions. His wide range of influences pays dividends too: Mary J. Blige's ''Crazy Games'' becomes a post-bop playground, Bjork's ''Unison'' an irresistible chant. Rarely are jazz and pop straddled with such grace and purpose.
