A period swashbuckler, a kung fu flick, a monster movie, a conspiracy thriller, a love story, and a Merchant Ivory social critique all rolled up into one eye-bugging horse pill, this French box office hit is strictly for connoisseurs of mondo bizarro cinema. Far too long, really not very good—but, on its own terms, wonderful. B-
