''Every face that I see/So much younger than me,'' laments Johnette Napolitano in ''When I Was a Fool,'' a bracingly honest self-portrait of the itinerant rocker in middle age. If all of Group were this gripping, it'd be an early album-of-the-year contender. It's not quite; the trio's first record since '93 offers too much mid-tempo moodiness, too little seminal fury. But even Napolitano's gentler midlife grappling is tangy and, yes, therapeutic.
