Lead Performances: The Hilliard Ensemble and Christoph Poppen

Not only is this hugely popular classical album one of the year's best (an almost unheard-of combination), it's also a daring concept record. Bach's Violin Partita in D Minor, played with focused radiance by Poppen, is interwoven with sacred Bach music performed by the Hilliard Ensemble. Most radically, the two parts are mesmerizingly joined on the famous violin piece the Chaconne. Purists may balk. The rest of us sink into Morimur's spare, profound world.
