BEST-SELLERS

JAMES & HIS GIANT REACH

James Patterson brings in a bouquet of green for his publisher. His new thriller, the self-evidently titled Violets Are Blue (900,000 copies in print after three pressruns), debuts at No. 2. Violets is Patterson's third hardcover best-seller of 2001. Jonathan Franzen's The Corrections (900,000 copies in print after eight pressruns) jumps three spots to No. 3 this week. What with his recent National Book Award, there are now four editions of his novel: the original, the Oprah-logoed, the NBA-stickered, and the NBA-stickered, Oprah-logoed. All this for an author who wanted his book jacket unsullied by endorsements.
