Peter Carey's Must-Read

The author of "True History of the Kelly Gang" offers his own book recommendation

Peter Carey recommends The Blood of Strangers: Stories From Emergency Medicine by Frank Huyler (Owl Books, $13)

Huyler is a doctor, an emergency room physician living in Santa Fe, N.M., and that's what he writes about—the ER. He writes so beautifully, in that humble, simple way that is very affecting. It is always lovely, isn't it, to really get inside a world that you think you know all about but don't. It's very compassionate, filled with detail and just splendid, lucid sentences.

Peter Carey is the Booker Prize-winning author of True History of the Kelly Gang, which Vintage Books has just published in paperback.
