The uncoagulated anguish of parents mourning the death of a child has rarely been more powerfully depicted than in the collected vignettes of grief, rage, and retribution that make up In the Bedroom, a riveting domestic drama. Sissy Spacek plays a Maine teacher dealing with the loss of her son with the kind of authority and grace for which Oscar nominations are made. Filmmaker Todd Field builds his movie with such confident vision that it's hard to believe Bedroom is his feature directorial debut. This is a landscape Field appreciates with the embrace of a real artist.
