Gilbert is facing a divided board, split between her allies and those who vocally opposed her (McCord labeled one of her fliers "flat-out lies"). She doesn't claim to promise unity, but hopes that using strict parliamentary procedure will quash the free-for-alls. "It's [the board members'] prerogative to disagree," Gilbert says. "But if Robert's Rules are followed to the letter, nobody can bend them to follow a personal agenda of attack."
Even so, etiquette may not be in the board's genetic makeup. Daryl Anderson, an outgoing board member, says heightened drama is to be expected in a union of professional drama queens. "We're actors!" he says. "I don't think it's as permanently scarring as it might be in a room of civilians. Actors understand the value of performance in getting a point across." If only anyone could actually agree on a point.
