BOX OFFICE

BOO BOWS BIG

Monsters, Inc.'s scare-pair Mike and Sulley don't just collect kids' screams but also their piggy banks. The Pixar-Disney flick set a new record for an animated-film debut--topping Toy Story 2's $57.4 million in 1999--and scored the sixth biggest three-day opening ever. Not a bad way to kick off this year's holiday movie season. Jet Li's The One showed some nifty box office kung fu, landing at No. 2, and John Travolta's thriller Domestic Disturbance helped the top 10 crack the $100 million mark for the first time in 12 weeks. In limited release, the Coens' The Man Who Wasn't There and French import Amelie snagged hearty per-screen averages--$17,036 and $45,490, respectively.
