"What's Going On"

After the recording of the recent benefit single ''What's Going On,'' nine versions of the track were mixed by such producers as Jermaine Dupri, Moby, the Neptunes, and Fred Durst. Dupri's original, currently on radio and MTV, provides a bland R&B backdrop for soloists including Ja Rule, Gwen Stefani, and Michael Stipe. But like most of the other cuts, it has too many voices and egos. The London mix has only one -- Bono -- but is still dull. Durst's head-banging version is just plain wrong. Only the stripped-down Neptunes and Moby mixes get anything at all going on.
