It's A Draw

They've been around for 41 years, but Etch A Sketch magnetic doodlers are still drawing plenty of attention. A massive Etch A Sketch dominated the stage during 'N Sync's number at MTV's Video Music Awards (above), with Michael Jackson himself popping out. ''It was far beyond anything we were expecting,'' says Larry Killgallon, president of Etch A Sketch manufacturer Ohio Art, about the MTV spot. Partly as a result of the VMAs -- which featured mini Etch A Sketches in guests' goody bags -- the company expects sales to increase by 10 percent this year. In a more highbrow arena, NYC artist Matt Carson uses Etch A Sketches to create detailed cityscapes and classic images, like the poster for North by Northwest. At a recent show at Brooklyn's Bar Reis, illustrations of the Chrysler Building and the Williamsburg clock tower sold for $120 each, but an epic vision of the Brooklyn Bridge was accidentally erased when it fell from its wall mounting. ''I took it well,'' says Carson of the mishap. ''After all, it's an Etch A Sketch. S---happens.''
