In the late '70s, a hippie music teacher in western Canada taught his elementary school students to play and sing classic-rock tunes, then recorded them in an echoey gym. Now outsider-music archivist Irwin Chusid has unearthed the results and released them on CD, insisting that these strange and charming renditions of songs like ''Space Oddity,'' ''I'm Into Something Good,'' and ''Desperado'' have artistic merit. Surprisingly, he's right. In its own surreally amateurish way, this stuff is both accomplished and addictive.
