THIRTEEN CONVERSATIONS ABOUT ONE THING (2002)

Details Limited Release: May 24, 2002; Rated: R; Length: 102 Minutes; Genre: Drama; With: Alan Arkin, Clea DuVall, Amy Irving, Matthew McConaughey and John Turturro

Random characters collide like errant billiards, a yuppie lawyer (Matthew McConaughey) gets his comeuppance while a naive young housecleaner (Clea DuVall) loses all faith, and the screen fills with long, still shots of empty streets. Yes, it's one of those earnest cinematic treatises on fate, happiness, and human connection. There are luminous performances, but a genteel tone of despair drags the whole thing down. Still, if you're in the right damp-wool mood, you may connect.
