Austin's answer to Bruce Springsteen gets in touch with his Mexican-American roots on this album of music from the original theatrical production of the same name. It's warm, folksy, and authentic-sounding, but the general air of portentous didacticism makes you wish Escovedo had knocked off a tune or three as meaninglessly fun as, say, ''La Bamba.''
