Lead Performance: Loudon Wainwright
A

Awkward attempts at communication with exes, the awful aging process, deceased parents, one's own mortality: Wainwright has tackled these topics before, but rarely with the detail, poignancy, and downplaying of facile yuks that he does on his best album in a decade. With tasteful backing that never overwhelms the yearning and ruefulness in his voice, Wainwright continues to make the personal universal. ''Donations,'' a love song in which he confesses his intimate feelings for someone by asking her to be listed on his ''in case of an accident'' card, is just one example of his twisted brilliance.
