Working in grime-enhancing black and white, director Marc Singer offers a stark, unsentimental look at the lives of the men and women who resided in the train tunnels under New York City's Penn Station before Amtrak took legal action to evacuate them. There are stories here filled with sadness and deep regret, but what's so surprising is how these underground inhabitants have made real homes for themselves. They live in shanties decorated with wall hangings, watch TV, shave with electric razors, and cook on makeshift stoves (they have access to electricity). These sub-metropolitans have managed to create an atmosphere of warmth and community in one of the coldest places in Manhattan.
