Davy Crockett, fashion muse? Having restyled the cowboy hat for last season (see Madonna's Music), designers are now pushing luxe versions of Crockett's trademark coonskin cap. The pricey toppers (from $925 to $2,500) from Prada, J. Mendel, Daryl K, and Dolce & Gabbana, among others, are expected to cause a stampede once the weather turns chilly—the economy be damned. ''Fur has become an increasingly [important] layer in the fashion world,'' says J. Mendel's Gilles Mendel. ''It's a magical fabric....Fur hats add a luxurious touch to whatever you wear.'' Unless, of course, you're from PETA.
