John Carpenter Finishes Off the Summer Movie Body Count

"John Carpenter's Ghosts of Mars" leads the on-screen killing spree

THE FINAL TALLY: 856

Summertime, and the living ain't easy—especially on screen. The season's tally was ratcheted up by John Carpenter's Ghosts of Mars (168 casualties) and Jeepers Creepers (roughly 161, many in a grisly cavern of corpses). American Outlaws saddled 46 fatalities, one apparently by soot poisoning, while Captain Corelli's Mandolin claimed 27. Rush Hour 2 and O KO'd 5 each, while The Deep End deep-sixed 3. Even comedies were deadly: Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back silenced 2, while Osmosis Jones did in about 30. (We also have dino egg on our faces after missing two deaths from Jurassic Park III's opening scenes.) The final total: an incredible 856, topping last year's 532—proving again that in Hollywood, summer is the killing season.
