UP IN 'SMOKE'
Nicholas Evans wooed women and animal-loving souls with The Horse Whisperer. His new book, The Smoke Jumper (450,000 copies out of the gate), is all about hunky Montana hero types who are dropped into woods to fight forest fires. And do their women ever love them! The novel, plugged by Evans and a real-life hunky jumper on the Today show, lands on the chart at No. 3 this week. Holy smoke! John Edward (see story on page 57), who communicates with the dead on his television show, is now a best-selling nonfiction author too. Crossing Over indeed.
