UP IN THE AIR Walter Kirn (Doubleday, $23.95) The author of Thumbsucker sold the film rights to his third novel, about a frenzied businessman, to Fox 2000. Jay Roach (Meet the Parents, Austin Powers) plans to produce and direct the film.

THE SECRET LIFE OF BEES Sue Monk Kidd (Viking, $24.95, scheduled for Jan. 2002) Kidd's much-buzzed-about first novel has not gone unnoticed by Hollywood. Producer Lauren Shuler Donner (You've Got Mail) optioned the book.

WAITING Ha Jin (Vintage, $13) Peter Chan (The Love Letter) will direct the film version of Jin's award-winning novel about a Chinese army doctor trapped in an arranged marriage. Chow Yun-Fat (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) will star.
