CHEAP HIT

The United Artists teen slasher flick Jeepers Creepers posted a new record for a Labor Day weekend opening ($15.8 million), which is sort of like saying Leprechaun 3 is the best Leprechaun movie. Wresting the previous Labor Day opening title from 1996's The Crow: City of Angels, UA's bogeyman opus also appeared to spank the current competition, but only because fellow rookie O bowed on fewer than half as many screens. At summer's end, box office receipts stand at $2.96 billion--roughly 10 percent higher than last year's total. And while the biggest hit of the season was DreamWorks' Shrek ($263 million), the real boss of the beach was Universal, whose four back-to-back chart-toppers rewarded the studio with the biggest piece of this summer's pie.
