A heroin addict diving into a putrid toilet bowl seems poetic when compared to Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh's first stab at adapting his work for the big screen. Back in the world of low-life Scots, a soccer player exacts sickening revenge after getting sacked by everyone he knows; an earnest loser (McKidd) endures repeated humiliation after marrying the town floozy; and, most disturbing, an acid-whacked club kid (Bremner) inhabits the animatronic body of a breast-feeding newborn. Powered with a thumping soundtrack but slowed by rarely sympathetic characters, this gallows-humored Train wannabe never leaves the station.
