Maybe the key to good, straight-ahead, metaphilosophy-free anime is brevity. With less than an hour to work with, the creators of Blood -- some of the same folks behind Ghost in the Shell -- tell the lean, mean, CGI-enhanced story of a haunted, sword-wielding young girl tasked by a shadowy government organization to hunt shape-shifting creatures of the night that infiltrate an American military base on Japanese soil during the Vietnam war. Feeling like a distant cousin of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Blood makes you wish it were longer, but at the same time, kinda glad it isn't.
