AILING On Aug. 10 in L.A., sitcom star Drew Carey, 43, underwent angioplasty to unclog an artery. Carey is ''happy to be home...and feeling fine,'' says a spokeswoman.... On Aug. 8, Whitney Houston's hubby, singer Bobby Brown, 32, was rushed to a Morristown, N.J., hospital after having a seizure, which Houston's spokeswoman said was caused by heat and a hectic schedule. The R&B bad boy refused to provide blood or urine samples, and left before being admitted. His rep wouldn't elaborate on the incident or Brown's health.... Poison bassist Bobby Dall, 38, had emergency back surgery Aug. 5 in Omaha for a spinal-cord injury of unknown origin. Poison will skip their 22 remaining summer concerts to allow for Dall's recovery.... On Aug. 8 in Corsica, French star Jean-Paul Belmondo (Breathless), 68, had a stroke that paralyzed the right side of his face. He was transferred to a Paris hospital and reportedly released from intensive care six days later.
DEALS After weeks of wrangling, Jermaine Jackson, 46, announced Aug. 10 that he'll perform with brothers Michael, Jackie, Marlon, and Tito as the Jackson 5 at the 30th anniversary celebrations of Michael's musical career, Sept. 7 and 10 in New York City. Jermaine had protested the shows' high ticket prices, which reached $2,500.
COURTS He stood, and a judge delivered. On Aug. 10, actor Edward James Olmos (Gossip), 54, was sentenced to 20 days in federal prison for trespassing last April on U.S. Navy land on the Puerto Rican island of Vieques. Olmos and others had been protesting the military's bombing tests on the island, a political hot spot since a civilian security guard died there in a 1999 bombing accident. (President Bush said recently he'll end the maneuvers in 2003.)
DEATHS HarperCollins editor in chief Robert Jones, 47, who oversaw works by such top writers as Armistead Maupin, of cancer, Aug. 13, in New York City.... Activist and author Maureen Reagan (First Father, First Daughter), 60, daughter of former President Ronald Reagan and actress Jane Wyman, of melanoma, Aug. 8, in Granite Bay, Calif. Her brief acting career included appearances on The Partridge Family and in the '64 Elvis Presley movie Kissin' Cousins.... Emmy-winning sitcom director Alan Rafkin (The Mary Tyler Moore Show, One Day at a Time), 73, of complications from heart surgery, Aug. 6, in L.A.
