Lead Performance: Earl Scruggs

Scruggs, a banjo legend for 40 years, has always sought to remain contemporary; here he lends his trademark tinkling to powerhouse performances from rock and country stars. Sting, Melissa Etheridge, Don Henley, and Johnny Cash keep things lively, but Billy Bob Thornton stands out, delivering a whispered vocal on ''Ring of Fire'' that's scarier than Beelzebub.
