It was released Stateside in a severely altered form as House of Exorcism, but this typically ornate chiller from Italian director Mario Bava is no William Friedkin rip-off. It's more like a variation on The Old Dark House with a necrophilia jones. Seventies talk-show staple Sommer stars as a tourist lost in Spain who takes shelter in a mansion presided over by a blind matriarch, her rock-star-handsome son, and a sinister lolly-licking butler (guess who?). All of Bava's trademarks are here: zoom-lens abuse, gorgeous color, jolts of ghoulish humor (check out Savalas' novel way of fitting an oversize corpse in an undersize casket). But if your tolerance for overripe Euro-horror is low, this could be hell to sit through.
