It's marvelous to see Francis Ford Coppola's hypnotic dark dream of a war opera on the big screen again. That said, this expanded edition of his Vietnam epic is hardly superior to the 1979 version. Quite the contrary, it's draggier and more portentous. Coppola has added 49 minutes of footage, notably the legendary ''French plantation'' sequence. On some level, the new scenes are intriguing footnotes, but by blending them into the finished film, Coppola has unbalanced, if not destroyed, its shape and flow. The original ''Apocalypse'' was perfectly poised between action and meditation. The new version feels 10 hours long.
