On the Soft Rock Renegades disc, obsessively prolific Guided By Voices leader Pollard reconnoiters with his former band's rhythm section for a scrappy set that has all the infectious tunesmanship, bracing lo-fi crunch, and cheerily impenetrable wordplay of a good GBV album. The more introspective Airport 5 reunites the singer with ex-GBV guitarist/songwriter Tobin Sprout for a brooding yet melodically winsome song cycle. Sprout's talents are also showcased on ''Demos & Outtakes,'' on which 20 low-key castoffs make a strong case for his subtly cerebral songcraft. All: B+
