GIVE HIM A 'HAND'

Seven down. Mystery writer Janet Evanovich's new novel drops from No. 1 to No. 5 this week as she makes way for the world according to John Irving. His 10th novel, The Fourth Hand (330,000 copies in print after three pressruns), deserves a hearty round of applause for an impressive performance in its first week on the shelves. Irving, who's leaving book touring to the amateurs, plugged his curious tale of appendages and Asian travels on Good Morning America. Meanwhile, the nation is up in arms over Jeff Shaara's new historical novel, Rise to Rebellion, which debuts at a proud No. 10.
