NEEDS FOR SPEED
NASCAR may be hot, but let's face it -- some of those racing-suit color combinations would have fashionistas hurling Jimmy Choos at their stylists. When it comes to influencing summer style, it's the street racing flick The Fast and the Furious that's in the driver's seat.
''Where do you think it all started from?'' star Vin Diesel, 34, asks modestly. ''I think our movie is definitely starting a trend.''
Whether it's Dolce & Gabbana's new racing-style jacket snapped up by the likes of Justin Timberlake and Madonna; Tag Heuer's watch line made with the same titanium and rubber used on Formula One race cars; or racing gloves (heralded by trend-spotting bible The Cassandra Report as the next big accessory), racing chic is moving from the speedway to the runway.
''The Fast and the Furious is having a huge effect,'' says Kevin Beard, founder of the Thousand Oaks, Calif.-based driving shoe manufacturer Piloti. ''The rise of car culture is happening everywhere. [And] that hot-rod mentality ties in to music, fashion, movies, and language.''
