Who'da thought Evil Dead auteur Sam Raimi would turn out to be such a gifted director of actors? Australian Blanchett, unjustly overlooked by the Oscars, delivers a dead-on portrayal of a Southern psychic called in to help locate a missing belle (Katie Holmes) in Raimi's deeply spooky gothic shocker. Among the multifarious standout supporting performers are Ribisi (as an unstable grease monkey), Oz's J.K. Simmons (as a cynical sheriff), and Keanu Reeves, who's unbelievably terrifying as an evil redneck. In a word, whoa.
