David Gordon Green draws whole lives with minimal strokes of dialogue and action in a fresh, stirring movie about young, first love in a small North Carolina town. The work is lyrical and wise, and Green conveys the mutable intensity of boy meets girl, boy loses girl with the authoritative originality of an important filmmaker. Paul Schneider (who cowrote the script) plays the young man nearly flattened by all he feels; enchanting and tenderly skewed Zooey Deschanel is the girl. (#696/697, Feb. 21)
