Sure, the man-trashing, the love across the gulf of the real world, and an incredibly steamy love scene in front of an open fridge may make this, based on a Terry McMillan novel, seem like something we've exhaled before, but Snipes' construction worker and Lathan's aspiring singer-songwriter create such heat that we don't mind that we can tell where that smoke's going. And it's especially gratifying to see them overcome their characters' flaws, rather than just tossing the relationship altogether after a rough patch.
