Make 'Believer'
Finally! with "The Last Taboo," (Movies) EW has given us a totally gush-free story masquerading as a review. Why, indeed, do big studios and distributors ignore smart, provocative films like The Believer (especially in favor of bland, bloated fare like Town & Country)? Because Hollywood isn't in the business of encouraging reflection or rewarding originality or (heaven forbid) challenging audiences. It exists simply to make lots of money (while being sure not to offend pseudo- moralists and nervous legislators). Bravo, EW, for exposing the commercial film industry in all its artless, gutless glory! PAUL A. STERMER paulstermer@earthlink.net St. Joseph, Mich.
Lisa Schwarzbaum's unflinching, brave essay on The Believer, Town & Country, and the hypocrisy of Hollywood was one of the most rousing and important pieces of film criticism I've read in a long time. Anyone who pays attention to the state of the entertainment business knows that the men up top are in need of a good swift kick and Ms. Schwarzbaum never fails to give it to them. I want to thank her for revealing what a lapse in logic we seem to be witnessing in the film industry. It makes no sense for studios to constantly insult audiences by inflicting the latest Tom Green or Farrelly brothers debacle on us and then refuse to back a challenging, important film because they are afraid of what people will think.
