Matapari, a chatty boy hero, thrives in the chaos of postcolonial Congo. From the time of his birth (he was the third baby to emerge when only twins were expected), he was dubbed a ''child of surprises, [who] shall hear sounds and words others will not...[who] shall see wonders that others will not.'' Relating the recent history of his homeland, Matapari puzzles over the doublespeak inherent in imperialisms, neocolonialisms, scientific socialisms, and the like. Then his uncle Boula Boula becomes a high-up government mover and shaker, giving Matapari a ringside view of corrupt power in action. Comic, canny, and searing, Dongala's English- language debut uses this wide-eyed narrator to full -- and indicting -- effect.
