It's a familiar story: Actor takes ho-hum office job for the health benefits. Actor quits, disillusioned. Actor writes play about work, sells book rights, becomes avatar of dot-com weltschmerz. At least that's Mike Daisey's story. The Seattle actor/playwright turned his two years of buzzwords and free bagels into 21 Dog Years: Doing Time @ Amazon.com, a one-man show that's just finished its hometown run (one mile from CEO Jeff Bezos' office) and, beginning June 21, hits San Francisco and then moves on to L.A. and New York City. ''We were selling books, CDs, and DVDs,'' says Daisey, 28, ''but I thought [Amazon was] changing the world.'' The Seattle Times called the show ''surreal, silly and telling'' but complained about Daisey's lack of refinement. Isn't painting Bezos as a callous deity -- reading letters to him out loud, doubting they'll be heard -- a little much? Says Daisey, ''I'm continuing my ongoing quest to get Jeff to come see my show.''
