After two years on the shelf, this much-bootlegged ''lost'' album gets a remix and posthumous release well into Ryan Adams' solo career. Unlike their rowdy beginnings, Whiskeytown's laconic swan song is sometimes less alt-country than halt-country. Raspy, elegant, sleepy -- think Johnny Rzeznik crooning the Glen Campbell-Jimmy Webb songbook at 3:30 a.m. Strings, horns, and even a stray loop, up the lonesome ante. It's not the classic some claim, but don't believe the title, either: They exited with a gem, not a germ.
