Details Lead Performance: Depeche Mode

On the first single, ''Dream On,'' Dave Gahan sings passionately of bony fingers, sickly children, and crawling skin. But the vet synth-popsters never let gloomy sentiments get in the way of a good tune. Producer Mark Bell (Bjork), smartly leaves the retro melodies intact, while decorating them with experimental, electronic gloss. After enduring 13 thematically unlucky numbers, however, listeners may need to pray to their own personal Jesus.
