EMINEMANDEM People were doing double takes when Eminem wandered into the green room sans entourage and happily began taking pictures with fans. It was only on close inspection that the blond in an oversize sweat suit was revealed to be Ryan Shepard, Slim Shady's 19-year-old stunt double. ''When we're standing next to each other, we're like twins,'' said Shepard, who says the rapper occasionally asks him to circulate through a crowd to grab attention. Shepard, who strapped in for the flying segment of Eminem's performance (the pair swapped places on stage in a fake phone booth), will be joining the star on his upcoming tour. ''This is a great job,'' he admitted. ''I mean, five months ago I was flipping burgers at McDonald's.''
PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT Jack Black and Sarah Michelle Gellar's opening number was supposed to be a whiz-bang production to put Broadway to shame. Singing a tune called, simply, ''Movies Kick Ass!'' the pair were to dance and sing with a bevy of show girls. The audience was even instructed to sing along as stars such as Brittany Murphy (''Don't Say A Word''), Andy Garcia, and Andy Dick trilled select lyrics from their seats. Things were going okay, but then the music cut out. ''That was a little nerve-wracking,'' Gellar admitted later. ''But I think in the long run it helped. It was like, Oh, we get a second chance at this. So the nerves were eased a little bit.'' Well, maybe not the nerves of audience members who waited patiently for the opening to be restaged and reshot, but that's showbiz.
LADIES FIRST The Osbournes might be MTV's royal family, but Mandy Moore could be the network's lady-in-waiting. The singer-actress was the star most frequently mentioned by her fellow stars as worthy of winning (she was nominated in the Breakthrough Female category). ''I'm rooting for her to win because she's just the sweetest person in the entire world, even though I'm nominated against her,'' gushed ''Princess Diaries'' star Anne Hathaway. ''She's been so nice to my kids, I can't even begin to tell you. She's such a good girl,'' added Sharon Osbourne. But ''Undercover Brother'' star Neil Patrick Harris had his doubts. ''If she gets it over Britney Spears for 'Crossroads,' I'll be disappointed,'' he joked with deadpan delivery. ''She must know some MTV people or something.''
