Winona Ryder's hearing on Monday on shoplifting charges began with her attorney being denied a fifth request for a stay but ended with him getting his wish. Trying to get through the crush of TV reporters at the Beverly Hills courthouse, Ryder was hit by a camera and fractured her right arm, the same limb she broke last year while filming the upcoming Adam Sandler comedy, ''Mr. Deeds.'' A deputy trying to clear the way for her pushed a cameraman, who fell and made Ryder, her lawyer, Mark Geragos, and another deputy tumble, the Los Angeles Times reports.
Monday's hearing began with Beverly Hills Superior Court judge Elden S. Fox denying Geragos' motion for another delay and ordering him to produce his client, Reuters reported. Within an hour, she appeared, just in time to hear a Saks Fifth Avenue security manager testify to her allegedly suspicious behavior at his department store last December that made him believe she had swiped $4,800 worth of merchandise. (Ryder has pleaded innocent to the charges.) But when Ryder returned to the courthouse after lunch, she was injured in the gauntlet of reporters, and Judge Fox postponed the hearing until Thursday so that Ryder could receive medical attention. So Geragos got Ryder a break after all -- just not the kind she wanted.
