The Vatican vs. cross-wearing celebs. As if His Holiness hasn't got enough on his mind, the Pope has turned fashion critic, chastising such stars as Elizabeth Hurley and Jennifer Aniston for wearing jewel-encrusted crosses, claiming they violate religious notions of poverty. True, crosses have become trendy (''I am selling more than ever,'' says L.A.-based vintage jeweler Neil Lane), but the Pope may have been hasty in deeming gems anti-Catholic. As Lane notes: ''I just bought an amazing 19th-century cross with amethysts and diamonds that belonged to a bishop.'' Amen.
