Popcorn Flicks

It was the anti-Oscars. At the MTV Movie Awards, taped at L.A.'s Shrine Auditorium June 1, Academy underdogs got their due. Ali's Will Smith won Best Male Performance, Moulin Rouge's Nicole Kidman won Best Female Performance, and Best Movie went to The Lord of the Rings. And while Reese Witherspoon, Mandy Moore, and Denzel Washington also took home Popcorn trophies, the night's most-talked-about celeb may have been punk princess Kelly Osbourne, who sang ''Papa Don't Preach.'' ''She's got butterflies in her tummy,'' said mom Sharon. ''I'm terrified because I know how hard people can be.'' Not to worry. The song went off without a hitch (far better than the technical-difficulty-wracked song-and-dance opening of cohosts Sarah Michelle Gellar and Jack Black). Kelly's brother, Jack, even captured the evening on a mini-camera. Does this mean he's considering becoming a member of the press? ''No,'' he demurred. ''You guys are evil.'' -- Liane Bonin and Jon Regardie
