Winona Ryder has been getting a lot of humor mileage out of her new bad reputation, wearing a ''Free Winona'' T-shirt on the cover of W magazine and spoofing her current shoplifting charge in two skits on the ''Saturday Night Live'' finale last month, including one that suggested the ''SNL'' cast suspected her of swiping their stuff. But maybe they should have worried in earnest, as Los Angeles prosecutors are saying that the actress' arrest for shoplifting at a Beverly Hills department store last December wasn't an isolated incident.
With Ryder having been ordered last week to stand trial on shoplifting charges, prosecutors have told both Newsweek and the New York Daily News that they have evidence of a prior incident. The ''Edward Scissorhands'' star has never before been charged with taking a five-finger discount, and she has no criminal record. Still, a district attorney's office spokesperson tells the Daily News that prosecutors may use their evidence to boost their case by establishing a pattern of behavior. Ryder's lawyer, Mark Geragos, has not commented on this disclosure, but he continues to maintain Ryder's innocence, saying he'll produce receipts at the trial for the $4,800 worth of merchandise Ryder allegedly lifted.
