George Stephanopoulos will host ABC's ''This Week.'' The former Clinton aide will anchor the Sunday morning news program

George Stephanopoulos, who once batted reporters' questions away as Bill Clinton's youthful press secretary, will raise his own journalistic profile as the anchor of ABC's ''This Week,'' beginning in September, according to published reports. Stephanopoulos will replace current hosts Sam Donaldson and Cokie Roberts as host of the show, which competes on Sunday mornings with NBC's ''Meet the Press'' and CBS' ''Face the Nation.''

Stephanopoulos' past in partisan politics has raised criticism of his new journalistic role, but Republican critics should be glad to learn that conservative mainstay George Will is slated to stay on ''This Week'' as a panelist. In any case, Stephanopoulos told the Associated Press that his critics should keep an open mind. ''I will continue to show that I'm a tough but fair interviewer,'' the newly anointed anchor said. ''I'm not going to bring any bias to the table. I'm going to do what I can to make sure that people have the full picture.'' Or at least that goes for the people who actually watch the news on Sunday morning.
