Summer Movie Bootleg Of The Week

WINDTALKERS (VHS, $5) AVAILABILITY Entrepreneurs in downtown Brooklyn broke the code a day before John Woo's war epic hit theaters. PACKAGING Surprisingly professional-looking, with clear photos and credits pulled from ads and a back-of-the-box WWII history lesson. CONSUMER REPORT This is no ordinary camcorder-in-the-audience job. Digital pixellation and sound blips suggest it was recorded at a screening of an unfinished print of the film. The right third of the screen is missing, but that really matters only when the subtitles for Navajo speakers are cut off. The grainy picture and tinny sound make it feel a lot more like Apocalypse Now than the lackluster production otherwise deserves.
