Lump together some ornate 18th-century French costumes, a few palatial settings, and a bunch of British accents (hey, isn't this France?), and you have Charles Shyer's pre-Revolution film about a scorned would-be royal (the badly miscast Swank) fighting for her birthright, her dignity, and a really big house. Period films can be awe-inspiring if rendered with attention to detail (Dangerous Liaisons, Sense & Sensibility), but an Oscar-winning star and attractive trappings do not a masterpiece make.
