An angry, bereaved boy finds comfort in the friendship of his small town's resident loony (Redgrave), who has endured her own loss by ''communicating'' with her dead son via Morse code. (Somehow, I don't think this treacly angels-around-us blather is what Mr. Morse had in mind.) It may not have post-mortem messaging -- or six-time Oscar nominee Redgrave ''interpretive dancing'' to Mozart -- but 1981's On Golden Pond presents a much more satisfying matchup of a mad-as-hell kid and the crotchety old person who helps him heal.
