Piano Plan

Billy Joel checks out of rehab. The singer plans to attend play premiere and resume touring in September

Billy Joel's personal storm front may have passed: The piano-pounding singer/songwriter checked out of a rehab and psychiatric hospital on Wednesday after a 10-day stay, according to published reports. Joel was undergoing treatment at Connecticut's Silver Hill Hospital (the same facility Mariah Carey stayed in last year), for what his record label called a ''specific and personal problem.''

Joel is feeling well enough to plan a July 19 trip to Chicago to see the debut of ''Movin' Out,'' the new musical built around some of his songs, according to USA Today. He also plans to go back on the road with Elton John in September. In a People interview cited by USA Today, the singer said that his decision to enter rehab was prompted by his daughter, Alexa Ray. ''I told my daughter that I recognized I was having a problem,'' Joel told People. ''And my gift to her for Father's Day was going to be cleaning up my act.''

Joel, who reportedly crashed his Mercedes not long before entering rehab, postponed his tour dates with John earlier this year, citing ''acute laryngitis, inflamed vocal cords and an acute upper respiratory infection.''
