Papa Don't Teach

Kelly Osbourne is releasing a solo album. The 17-year-old goddaughter of metal follows up on her hit Madonna cover

Despite canceling a much-touted ''Tonight Show'' performance, Kelly Osbourne's singing career isn't going off the rails. Ozzy's daughter is proceeding with her plans to record a solo album, which her label now expects to release by the fall, in time to coincide with MTV's second season of her family's ''The Osbournes,'' according to USA Today. Osbourne intends to begin recording sessions in July with Ric Wake, who produced her hit cover of ''Papa Don't Preach,'' the newspaper reported.

Osbourne is also cowriting songs with Wake, who's worked with Jennifer Lopez, Mariah Carey, and Celine Dion. ''I think it's going to be real edgy, with a lot of attitude,'' Wake tells USA Today. ''Kelly hasn't had much experience, but she knows what she's doing. She's a chip off the old block." Osbourne performed live at the MTV Video Music Awards, but subsequently canceled a ''Tonight Show'' appearance, citing a broken arm and exhaustion.

The 17-year-old recorded ''Papa Don't Preach'' with members of Incubus; the song was released on the ''Osbourne Family Album'' compilation. Unlike any of Ozzy's recent releases, the song is a Top 40 hit, so just call Kelly the Princess of Darkness.
