Rux Revue (1999)

EW's GRADE
B

Details Lead Performance: Carl Hancock Rux; Genres: Experimental, Folk

Street poet Rux's declamations can get a little gaseous, a little emptily verbose (a common failing of so-called spoken-word artists). Yet his autobiographical reveries, delivered in a charismatic bass-baritone, have an undeniable power; they stick in your mind. The musical settings in Rux Revue, supervised by (among others) John King (Beastie Boys) and Rothrock-Schnapf (Beck), are rarely less than engaging and occasionally lovely.
